MEMORY
In 1997, a Master Plan was approved for the Reform and Expansion of the “Nuestra Señora de Candelaria” University Hospital in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, dependent on the Canary Islands Health Service, which was developed in different projects by phases, Phases A, B, C and D between 1999 and 2006 with sub-projects as the Functional Plan was revised, the reform was developed leaving a final phase pending due to the Administration not having a budget. The difficulty was so great that this team proposed the study of building a new hospital due to the complexity of the project, although the proposal was rejected, and we were asked to make the Master Plan viable, which we finally achieved.
This Hospital was built in three different phases, from 1965 onwards, and basically consisted of a General Pavilion, a Maternal-Child Hospital, attached to the previous one, and an independent Traumatology Pavilion, without reference to the floors of the previous ones and connected to these by inclined walkways. Each building acted independently.
Other buildings completed the complex, such as the Nursing School, the Emergency Room and Industrial Buildings.
The Master Plan foresees the unification of the entire Hospital and its central services, through the creation of a single surgical block with 18 operating rooms and 6 CMA rooms, when initially there were 8 different surgical blocks, two UCl’s, two hospitalisation blocks, two kitchens, three diagnostic imaging areas, etc.
Our solution focused on creating a double circulation network with internal and external differentiation and adequate zoning prioritising the relationships between the most important services in their physical proximity. Throughout the process, the portfolio of services has been expanded, which has forced the Functional Plan to be reviewed repeatedly. Giving rise to extensions of the different Phases, which were included in the different projects mentioned.
Finally, the Hospital has a single hospitalisation area, with two units per floor distributed over 11 floors, a central services area for Diagnosis and Treatment and an Outpatient Care area, a single Surgical Block, a centralised kitchen, a single Laboratory area, etc., all of them well connected by the circulation network.
