MEMORY

The new Puerta del Mar hospital in Cadiz is planned on a small, irregular plot facing the bay, in an uneven urban environment undergoing transformation, privileged by its accessibility and proximity to the sea. Although the lack of available space has meant greater complexity in the already complicated design of the hospital, we have not wanted to give up the potential of the building to become a new urban landmark of great architectural quality, capable of generating a city and of reflecting and remembering the landscape in which it is located.

The project creates a new structure of public space through the entrance plaza, which extends into the triple-height lobby of the hospital, with views of the sea and which opens the city towards the bay, and also through the extensive garden on the third floor, an expressive topographic gesture that provides pleasant views of the entire environment.

The careful volumetric composition, consisting of a three-story plinth on which three transversal hospitalization pieces are arranged, and the free-standing volume of the administrative building, is very functionally effective, and allows the promenade to be finished on multiple scales.

Urban acute care hospital, teaching and university. Large area of research laboratories for the Biomedical Institute. General and pediatric emergencies. Day hospitals integrated into the outpatient area. Large areas for families, mothers’ hotel.
